Wellness and Why It Matters
Wellness is dynamic progression of being aware of and making choices that leads to a pleasing and fulfilling life. It can also be defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is a realization of one’s true potential to live a healthier, happier and more successful and balanced existence. Wellness is the value or condition of having a healthy body and mind which is brought about by measured effort.
To have a higher quality of life to live, one needs to consider achieving an optimal state of wellness. Our wellbeing in turn affects our actions and emotions making wellness a very crucial factor to consider. It is therefore critical and important for every individual to achieve maximum wellness in order to subdue stress, reduce risks of illness and ensure positive interactions. Wellness is an active life process where one utilizes awareness and make choices that leads to more healthy, gratifying and happier life.
Wellness is comprised of eight proportions; emotional, occupational, spiritual, environmental, financial, social and intellectual. Each proportion of wellness have a relationship with each other and contribute equally to achieving better wellbeing. Emotional wellness involves understanding one’s feelings and adapting effectively to stress. It is essential for one to be attentive when it comes to self-care and relaxation and also trying to grow and learn from experience. It means having the capability to know and get in terms with our emotions rather than rejecting them, have a positive approach to life and enjoy it regardless of the often disappointments. Environmental wellness gives us the inspiration to live concerning our surrounding and encourages us to live in peaceful coexistence while taking care of our environment. This promotes our interaction with nature and personal environment. Spiritual wellness means knowing which resources and habits to use to cope up with issues that come up in life.
Financial wellness involves one learning and knowing how to manage their finances to fit into their expenses. Money at many times is found to be the leading cause of stress among people. Financial stability compared to instability brings a peace of mind and satisfaction to one’s life and improves the general wellbeing of the individual.
Intellectual wellness is the ability to open up to and appreciate new ideas and contributions when tackling a situation and continual efforts to gain more knowledge.
Occupational wellness involves being satisfied in your daily activities, appreciating your contributions towards your job which leads to enrichment and gratification in life in relation to your job. Social wellness is the ability to form relations with other people other than our peers in the society.
Optimal physical wellness is achieved through the combination of beneficial physical activity and healthy eating habits.
